The British Thermal Unit(BTU) measurement system is used to measure the energy consumption in air conditioning system including heating and cooling system. Because the BTU measurement reflects the actual energy consumption of each tenant, the HVAC contractors usually refer to the BTU value to charge the tenants of electrical bill. In the other hand, the BTU measurement system is also used in the building management system and energy saving system to monitor the energy efficiency in order to make any needful adjustment to improve the building performance.

Based on our long-term experience with the BTU measurement projects, we designed two BTU measurement solutions and hope to provide user a total solution.

Solution 1
In solution 1, we provide one Aecl BTU meter, two Pt500 sensors and one flowmeter. We will help user to choose the flowmeter based on the actual application. Because of the flexibility of choosing the flow meter, the price of the solution would be more competitive.
As shown in figure 1, user should install the Pt500 sensors in the return and supply pipe, install flow sensor in one of the pipes and connect the sensors to the Aecl BTU meter to collect the temperature and flowrate data. The BTU meter is able to automatically calculate the energy consumption of the air conditioning system based on the real time liquid temperature of supply and return pipe and instantaneous flow rate, meanwhile, send the data to the BMS system.

ABU series BTU meter
Designed-meet OIML R75 Class C and EN 1434, Aecl ABU Series BTU Heat meter is a stand- alone heat meter and controller. The BTU meter is compatible with two flow sensor input signals which are pulse and open collector, meanwhile, it is also equipped with three optional signal outputs, relay, pulse and digital RS485 Modbus RTU signal. Besides, the instantaneous and accumulated flow, temperature and energy consumption could be directly checked and calibrated in the bright LCD controller.

Solution 2
In solution 2, we provide one AFU-800 Ultrasonic flowmeter/heat meter and two Pt100 sensors. As shown in figure 4, in addition to measure the flow rate, AFU-800 could collect the signal from two Pt 100 sensors to acquire the temperature variation, meanwhile, calculate the heat consumption. The AFU-800 could be installed without breaking the pipe, hence the whole system could be installed and maintained without downtime. Besides, we provide self-adhesive patch type Pt 100 sensors which could be installed without breaking the pipe. The convenience of installation and maintenance could effectively save the cost of human resource and of the system shutdown.

AFU-800 Ultrasonic flowmeter/heat meter
AFU-800 combines both flow rate and heat/BTU measurements in one device. It features on its excellent anti-interference performance and stability. The AFU-800 flowmeter provides one digital RS485 output and one analog current output for data monitoring. Furthermore, the flowmeter provides both relay and OCT output for back end devices control, for example, control the flow or heat switch based on the operation situation. As shown in figure 5, the transducers of AFU-800 could be directly attached on the pipe which makes the installation and maintenance simpler.
