Private LoRa Network-LoRa Modbus RTU connection

I. PrefaceWhen it comes to the wireless integration of field devices, most system integrators will encounter the challenge of different protocols between facilities and systems. Besides, in the renovation case of the old building, the fixed distribution of pipes and cables makes the sensor deployment more complex and increases the installation cost as well. With regard to these difficulties, Aecl develops the devices with the LoRa Modbus RTU communication to provide an optimal wireless solution.
II. IntroductionThe LoRa Modbus RTU communication is based on Semtech RF technology which features on long-range wireless modem and provides ultra-long range spread spectrum communication and high interference immunity. The data format is Modbus RTU protocol which is commonly used in the automation system and enables the users to easily integrate the existing Modbus RTU devices. The LoRa Modbus RTU communication is widely used in smart building, smart logistics and smart agriculture as a rather cost and effective solutions for the long range and low data transmission.
A. Wireless air quality monitoringTo deploy the private LoRa network in indoor air quality monitoring system, users will need Aecl LoRa sensor and the AUS-401 LoRa gateway. As shown in figure 1, the LoRa sensors could be easily paired up with the LoRa gateway. Users can interface the gateway with their back end system or PLC to access the real time air quality data in Modbus RTU data format.
AUS-401 GatewayThe AUS-401 master gateway is able to wirelessly collect the data from maximum 32 units of Aecl air quality transmitters and send the data via RS485 or RS232 interface to the system or PLC. The data format is in standard industrial protocol Modbus RTU.
LoRa Air quality transmittersAecl released a whole series of wireless IAQ sensor nodes including temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, PM2.5, PM10, HCHO, TVOC, illuminance and oxygen measurement. With Semtech SX1272 RF chip embedded, the Aecl LoRa transmitter could automatically pair up with AUS-401 master gateway to transmit the measurement data. Besides, the interface could be changed by DIP switches from LoRa wireless interface to RS485 wired interface which provides higher flexibility of the installation.
B. Wireless device controlAecl develops the smart plug and hope to provide users the solution of wireless automation control. The smart plug could be controlled wirelessly by the system via AUS-401 gateway. As indicated in figure 2, users can define the set point in their back end system and send the instruction to the AUS-401 master gateway. When the indoor air quality is over the defined point, the AUS-401 master gateway will send signal wirelessly to the smart plug to turn on or off the ventilation devices such as ventilation fan or alarm.
C. Wireless integration of the existing facilitiesTo provide a more convenient way to integrate the existing devices to the IoT network, Aecl designs the AUS-405 RS485/ RS232 to LoRa converter as the media for integrating the existing devices such as flow meter, electric meter, water meter and etc. As shown in Fig. 3, the AUS-405 converter is able to collect the data from the existing facilities via RS485 or RS232 interface and send the data to the AUS-401 master gateway via wireless LoRa communication. Each AUS-405 could connect with 32 units of facilities. The AUS-405 converter allows the users to simplify the process of field devices integration and reduce the cost.

The AVC-310 series LoRa CO2 transmitter uses novel gold-plated infrared (NDIR) wave-guide technology to ensure its reliable and accurate reading, long-term stability and long life time. The wireless CO2 transmitter is equipped with swappable RS485 and LoRa interface which could be changed via DIP switches. Moreover, one SPDT dry contact output, which could be configured to a user defined CO2 set point, is designed for demand controlled ventilation in smart agriculture or smart building application. Using Semtech long range low power wireless communication technology, the AVC-310 LoRa CO2 Transmitter is used as the reliable sensor node in the LoRa internet of things. Besides, in addition to the standard CO2 measurement range 0 to 2,000 ppm, high level measurement range 0 to 9999 ppm is also optional. Long term exposure under improper CO2 concentration could cause health issue, for example, inflammation, headache, asthma and bone problems. Most system integrators or individual use the CO2 Transmitter together with the BMS system or air-conditioning system to alert people for the change of CO2 level. When the CO2 concentration is higher than the setting point, AVC-310 can trigger the backend alarm or ventilation devices with relay output to make the air circulation work to adjust the indoor air quality.
