Aecl launched devices for LoRa Peer to peer communication includes IAQ sensors, master gateway and RS485 to LoRa converter. In this article, you can find the working principle of how to use the private LoRa network for indoor air quality monitoring or integrating your existing devices into wireless network. Comparing to the wired connection, wireless connection is more flexible for the installation and also allows lower cost. The cost and effective LoRa network is ideal for smart logistics, food storage, building automation, smart agriculture and so on.

I. Preface
The structure of IoT network includes sensors, routers, servers, telecommunications and etc. When it comes to the integration of field devices, users will encounter the challenge of different protocols between the facility and the system. Besides, in the renovation case of the old building, the original distribution of the pipe and the electricity cable are fixed which makes the sensor deployment more complex and increases the installation cost as well. With regard to these difficulties, Aecl develops the private LoRa network to provide an optimal wireless solution.
The private LoRa network is designed based on the Semtech RF technology which features on long-range wireless modem that provides ultra-long range spread spectrum communication and high interference immunity. Unlike LoRaWan, the private LoRa network enables the users to integrate the field devices under Modbus RTU protocol which is commonly used by the automation system or PLC. It is widely used in smart building, smart logistics and smart agriculture as a rather cost and effective solutions for the long range and low data transmission.
To help you better understand this communication technology, we would like to briefly introduce how Private LoRa network works from the technical point of views.
II. Introduction of Aecl Private LoRa Network
A. Wireless air quality monitor and control
AUS-401 Gateway
As shown in Fig.1, the AUS-401 gateway is the center of the private LoRa network. The master gateway is able to collect the IAQ data from maximum 32 units of Aecl indoor air quality transmitters via wireless LoRa interface and send the data via wired RS485 or RS232 interface to the computer or PLC. The data is fully encrypted during wireless transmission and the data format is in the standard industrial protocol Modbus RTU which is appropriate with most automation systems or building management systems. The LoRa Communication distance in outdoor space could be 2 to 5 KM and the communication distance would be varied based on the length of the antenna. The frequency band of the LoRa communication could be adjusted depends on customer’s requirement from 862 to 932Hz. Meanwhile, in order to ensure the stability of wireless communication, the LoRa signal strength could be directly checked from the back end platform or systems.

LoRa Air quality transmitters
For the indoor air quality monitoring, Aecl released a whole series of wireless IAQ sensor nodes including temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, PM2.5, PM10, HCHO, TVOC, illuminance and oxygen measurement. With Semtech SX1272 RF chip embedded, the Aecl LoRa transmitter could automatically pair up with AUS-401 master gateway to transmit the measurement data. Besides, the interface could be changed by DIP switches from LoRa wireless interface to RS485 wired interface which provide higher flexibility of the installation.
Smart Plugs
Aims to provide a whole wireless solution to the users, Aecl develops the wireless smart plug for the device control. As shown in Fig. 1, the users can define the set point in the back end system and send the instruction to the AUS-401 master gateway. When the indoor air quality is over the defined point, the AUS-401 master gateway will send signal wirelessly to the smart plug to turn on or off the ventilation devices such as ventilation fan or alarm.
B. Wireless integration of the existing facilities
AUS-405 RS485/ RS232 to LoRa converter
Except for the IAQ LoRa sensor node, Aecl designs the AUS-405 RS485/ RS232 to LoRa converter as the media for integrating the existing devices like flow meter, electric meter, water meter and etc. As shown in Fig. 2, if the facility is under Modbus RTU protocol, the AUS-405 converter is able to collect the data from the existing facility via RS485 or RS232 interface and send the data to the AUS-401 master gateway wirelessly via LoRa communication. Each AUS-405 could connect with 32 units of facilities. The AUS-405 converter allows the users to simplify the process of field devices integration and reduce the cost.

    AQD-101

    The LoRa version AQD-101 Air Quality display wirelessly measures temperature, Relative humidity (RH), PM2.5 and Carbon dioxide, meanwhile, controls the ventilation devices through three dry contacts which could be specified as temperature, RH, PM2.5 or CO2 to optimize the building efficiency. The 4-in-1 air quality display impresses by its huge, bright and clear 7 segments LED display which allows the passengers in the public space to check the air quality, clock, and calendar information immediately.     The AVC-310 series LoRa CO2 transmitter uses novel gold-plated infrared (NDIR) wave-guide technology to ensure its reliable and accurate reading, long-term stability and long life time. The wireless CO2 transmitter is equipped with swappable RS485 and LoRa interface which could be changed via DIP switches. Moreover, one SPDT dry contact output, which could be configured to a user defined CO2 set point, is designed for demand controlled ventilation in smart agriculture or smart building application. Using Semtech long range low power wireless communication technology, the AVC-310 LoRa CO2 Transmitter is used as the reliable sensor node in the LoRa internet of things. Besides, in addition to the standard CO2 measurement range 0 to 2,000 ppm, high level measurement range 0 to 9999 ppm is also optional.Long term exposure under improper CO2 concentration could cause health issue, for example, inflammation, headache, asthma and bone problems. Most system integrators or individual use the CO2 Transmitter together with the BMS system or air-conditioning system to alert people for the change of CO2 level.
